Our Mission
At Braille House, we strive to empower people of all ages who are blind or have low vision through alternative formats.
Why?
For every 100 books a sighted child has access to, a blind child has only five.
Braille reading materials enable vision impaired children and adults to develop their literacy skills, leading to better employment opportunities, independence and social inclusion.
How You Can Make a Difference
There are many ways you can support Braille House and bring the joy of reading to those who need it most.
Workplace Giving
Workplace giving is a simple and tax-effective way to support Braille House. Also known as payroll giving, this allows staff to donate part of their pre-tax salary. Some companies match employees’ donations, doubling their impact. There are three ways you can set up workplace giving:
Goodcompany
Goodcompany enables employees to explore giving opportunities and donate to charities of interest to them.
Good 2 Give
Staff of companies registered with Good2Give can create individual giving accounts, choose a charity and manage their contributions themselves.
Bank Transfers
You can set up workplace giving internally through regular bank transfers that coincide with your pay cycle. To set up a bank transfer, please fill out this form. Upon completing the form you will receive deposit details.

Come spend the day with us at Braille House.
Learn how braille is made and some of the challenges faced by vision impaired individuals.
You can also help us create reading materials that directly support blind and low vision individuals. It’s a hands-on, rewarding experience that will inspire your whole team.

Each year, we hosted several impactful community engagement events, such as our Braille Literacy Challenge, which depend on sponsorship.

Gift in Will

Volunteer
We have an army of volunteers dedicated to bringing the world to the fingertips of blind and low vision individuals. Many of our volunteers are university students, retired professionals, parents and members of the vision impaired community.

Our Volunteer Roles
MS Word Transcribers
Transcribers convert books into Microsoft Word format, ensuring accuracy and adherence to specific formatting guidelines. This role requires attention to detail and a long-term commitment, as projects can take between a month and a year to complete. We're looking for dedicated volunteers who can see each project through to the end.
Duxbury Formatter
Duxbury Formatters transcribe documents into braille at a grade 2 level using Duxbury software and following a strict set of formatting guidelines. We ask that volunteers commit to completing projects in full. Formatters must have an in-depth knowledge of grade 2 braille.
Proofreaders
Proofreaders review and verify the work of our Formatters, ensuring high accuracy in grade 2 braille transcription. This role requires strong attention to detail, commitment to seeing each project through to completion, and proficiency in grade 2 braille. The position is ideally suited for remote work, allowing you to focus in a quiet environment.
Book Binders
Do you love books and want to help bring them to life? Once our braille pages are embossed, they need to be assembled into volumes, and that’s where you come in. No prior experience is required — we’ll provide all the necessary training to get you started easily.
Library Assistants
Library Assistants support our Librarian with shelving and preparing books for postal delivery to our blind and low vision readers across Australia. No prior experience is required — just a passion for literacy and helping others.
Workshop Facilitators
Are you passionate about engaging audiences and promoting braille literacy? Join our team as a Workshop Facilitator, delivering Braille Awareness presentations to enthusiastic groups.
