In 2023, Braille House (historically known as Queensland Braille Writing Association) was one of just five recipients of the Queensland Government's Accessible Tourism Enabler Grant, awarded during the Year of Accessible Tourism.

Introduction to Accessible Tourism

Project Background

Since late 2023, Braille House has been advancing a collaborative project to empower people who are blind or have low vision to navigate tourism and visitor settings with greater independence, equity and dignity.

This project focuses on providing an online package of resources tailored for accommodation, hospitality, tourism and event destination providers. The materials aim to help businesses:

  • Understand the business case for catering to blind and low-vision visitors.
  • Conduct self-assessment audits of facilities, staffing, procedures, customer experience, and marketing to identify barriers and areas for improvement.
  • Develop accessible tourism business strategies.
  • Enhance the provision of accessible information and marketing ofr blind and low-vision visitors.
