The 2025 Braille Literacy Challenge was a celebration of literacy, learning and academic achievement. More than 60 students from around the country came for this unique competition, with an infectious enthusiasm. Many of us at Braille House look forward to the annual Braille Literacy Challenge as the highlight of the year. It is a day that showcases what we do best.
Braille Literacy: Mission in Action
Braille House’s mission is to empower people of all ages who are blind or have low vision through alternative formats. Seeing young students showing such deft skill in Braille and pride in their impressive capability – to us represents mission success.
We want to see those successes spread across our community and beyond. It was great, then, to see Braille House recognized as a significant community organisation, with two news crews and representatives of local, state and federal government in attendance. One of our goals is to be the largest provider of Braille training in Australia, and we were excited knowing that many of the attendees learned Braille within those very same halls of our longstanding House.
Great Volunteers, Great People
We are fortunate to work with great people, and a large number of those great students, parents and volunteers were gathered together for the day. There was plenty of cheering and excitement, and impressive work from those taking on the Challenge. Excited too was Jonathan Craig, past participant of the challenge who spoke of how much the event meant to him. Our delightful staff and army of volunteers helped to brighten an already lovely day. We want to thank everybody who gave their time and their efforts, especially our committed volunteers. You form the backbone of what we do, and are our greatest asset.

Supporting Braille Literacy and Achievement
Literacy is a powerful force, and Braille remains the best tool for building literacy for blind learners, especially children. Braille House will continue to advocate for the benefits of touch literacy when its value can be so easily seen at the Braille Literacy Challenge every year. Braille empowers students to reach unique levels of achievement that are differentiable from their sighted peers, but also empowers students and people of all ages to connect with the world through reading and writing without differentiation. Braille House is committed to supporting this mission, and we couldn’t be prouder of the dedication of our volunteers, or the achievements of every participant. We are already looking forward to next year.
