Braille House recently marked the Braille House Library 125th anniversary with an extraordinary event at Government House in Brisbane, hosted by its Patron, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM. This event was not just a celebration of history, but a testament to the ongoing power of inclusivity, innovation and community.
Acknowledging 125 Years of Volunteerism and Dedication
At the afternoon tea, Braille House General Manager Richard Barker paid tribute to the volunteers whose dedication has sustained Braille House for over a century:
"125 years of volunteers and staff have tutored, transcribed, proofread, and produced braille books. The library would not have survived without this commitment."
The Governor also expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting the significance of the milestoneand the collective effort that made it possible.
In her speech the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young reiterated the importance of Braille House’s commitment to the vision impaired community, stating:
“Ironically, it is the public who are often blind–blind to the fact that, for every one hundred books available to a sighted child, there are fewer than five that can be accessed by children with visual impairment; and blind to the fact that quality services like this one are essential if those children are to be empowered to grow into fulfilled, engaged and independent adults who are valued by their communities.”
A Moment of Dignity and Joy: The Braille Menu Experience
One of the most touching highlights of the formal dinner was the introduction of braille menus, specially embossed by Braille House for all in attendance.
One guest’s reaction captured the essence of Braille House’s mission:
"I’ve spent my life having my [sighted] wife read the menu to me. Now, I can read the braille menu to her!"
This simple but powerful gesture highlighted how thoughtful inclusivity can transform experiences, offering dignity and empowerment to blind and low vision individuals.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Inclusive Literacy
As Braille House reflects on 125 years, the focus remains on the future: creating new opportunities for inclusivity and expanding access to braille literacy. Events like these reaffirm Braille House’s commitment to enriching lives, one page at a time.
