
Time is running out to enter Australia's only braille writing competition!
The Dickinson Memorial Literary Competition 2025 closes for entries on Friday, September 19th at 4pm, giving aspiring writers just weeks to submit their work for this prestigious 104th annual competition.
This competition is proudly sponsored by Brisbane City Council and this year's theme is "Discovery". The theme offers writers the opportunity to explore new perspectives, uncover hidden truths, or share personal journeys of finding something meaningful.
Competition Categories & Prizes
The competition welcomes entries across six categories:
- Adult categories: Short Story, Poem/Song Lyrics/Limerick, and Article/Opinion Piece
- Student categories: Senior (ages 13-17) and Junior (12 and under) Creative Writing
- People's Choice Creative Writing (open to all Australian residents)
Each category offers $350 for first prize and $150 for second prize, recognizing the talent and creativity of Australia's vision-impaired writing community.
Entry Guidelines
Adult and senior student entries can be up to 2,000 words, while junior student entries are limited to 1,500 words. Categories 1-5 are open to Australian residents who are legally blind or have low/no vision, while the People's Choice category welcomes all Australian residents. How to Enter
Writers can submit entries online through the Braille House website, by post to PO Box 610, Annerley QLD 4103, or by email. Submissions should be in hard-copy Braille, Word document, Simbraille, or Duxbury-readable file format.
Winners will be announced on Friday, October 24th, 2025, following a judging period in October.
