Braille House is dedicated to enhancing the lives of Australians who are blind or have low vision. Recently, Braille House was awarded the prestigious "Best Assistive Technology Product" for Tactile QR Code Indicators at the 2022 Australian Disability Service Awards. This recognition celebrates the organisation’s ongoing commitment to innovation and accessibility in the disability support sector.

A Legacy of Empowerment and Innovation

For over 125 years, Braille House has been at the forefront of promoting literacy and independence for people with vision impairments. Through braille transcription services, tactile resources, and a comprehensive lending library, Braille House continues to create inclusive opportunities for blind and low vision Australians to thrive.

The Game-Changing Tactile QR Code Indicator

When QR codes became widespread during the pandemic, Braille House wanted to ensure members of the VI community were included. This led to the development and production of a simple yet transformative solution—Tactile QR Code Indicators. These transparent tactile stickers allow people with low or no vision to easily locate and scan QR codes, enabling greater independence and privacy.

How It Works

  • The sticker features raised, tactile markings that guide users to the QR code.
  • It can be placed over any existing QR code without interfering with its functionality.
  • The design is both durable and easy to apply, making it suitable for various environments.

Real-World Applications

This breakthrough technology is already making waves across Australia, with governments, councils, stadiums, hotels, restaurants, and local cafés embracing its potential. Initially developed to improve access during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tactile QR Code Indicator has proven to have broader applications. QR codes can now provide easy access to menus, booking systems, and event details—opening doors to greater inclusion in the tourism, hospitality, and public services industries.

The Importance of Inclusive Technology

Braille House General Manager, Richard Barker, emphasised the broader significance of this innovation:

Winning this national award is wonderful recognition for Braille House and the amazing volunteers that donate their time and expertise to help us. It highlights that access and inclusion are valuable and make our community better for everyone. We believe there are opportunities for industries like tourism and hospitality to benefit from being more inclusive for people who are blind or have low vision.

Why Inclusive Design Matters

Accessible technology, such as the Tactile QR Code Indicator, empowers individuals and fosters independence. With over 575,000 Australians living with vision impairments, inclusive innovations are crucial for ensuring equal access to information and services.

Braille House’s success demonstrates that universal design benefits everyone—not just those with disabilities. As more businesses and organisations adopt inclusive practices, they stand to gain from reaching a wider audience and creating a more equitable society.
